Today the first ever Product Leader Roundtable has taken place in Berlin. Ten product leaders including CPOs, Heads of Product, and others have met to discuss relevant topics around product leadership.
SPLSG Product Leader Roundtable – Room ready for the participants
“It was a pleasure and an exciting experience the like to welcome all those professionals to our first ever Product Leader Roundtable. The level of discussions and quality individual contributions was great and we are looking forward to more in the future,” says Jörg Malang (initiator & founding partner SPLSG).
Based on this first success, SPLSG is planning to roll out this concept to other cities & countries as well. Together with SPLSG Ambassadors like the SPLSG Ambassador Berlin Luca Criscuolo, there will be a local “anchor” in every location.
All participants confirmed that they see value in this concept and are planning to attend the next iteration in about three months. In case you are interested in updates and/or in participating in the next Roundtable, please sign up with your email address below.
For the first time in Berlin, the Senior Product Management Leadership Group opens an invitation-only round table to experienced Product Leaders for learning and networking.
Product Leaders Among Themselves in Berlin
Similarly to a Bootcamp, the attendees will bring in advance topics. The list of topics will be prioritized upfront by the attendees and facilitated by Jörg Malang (Initiator & founding partner of Senior Product Leadership Group SPLSG).
Two topics have been identified already and will be covered in any case:
Perception of product management organizations and how to influence it
Innovation vs optimization – product management organizations juggling between unknown and safety
Jörg Malang, Facilitator & Host of the first Roundtable
Only attendees in an actual product leadership position qualify and only a restricted number of applicants will be selected based on their experience and potential contribution. By applying to this round table, your name will be included into an initial list, we will reach you ASAP to communicate the acceptance or rejection.
Jörg Malang says: “This is a unique opportunity to join and shape the only product leadership initiative in Berlin. We believe this helps our community to grow and reinforce in the years to come.”

General management training for product leaders – I am sure many product managers don’t automatically get excited when thinking about it. However, please think twice about it!
“Mini-MBA” training for product leaders
Typically making a product company successful requires influence on what is being built and how it is being built. The SPLSG vision “every company defines, builds, launches and operates products successfully” needs to come to live. The starting point will be to get alignment with the CEO and the C-Level Executives regarding company strategy and its implementation. Therefore, it is massively helpful to understand how a company operates and “ticks” from a CEO point of view. And a CEO is by definition a general manager.
Understanding his/her view, but also putting yourself into the shoes of other C-Level Executives is only partly achieved with empathy. In contrast, there are also additional hurdles that are grounded in functional expertise. At the end of the day, the biggest question is how to gain authority outside the area of own functional expertise. This is exactly the same challenge a general manager would face. He/she needs to be able to influence his/her organization without being an expert.
Typically you would need specific experience and/or education to become more knowledgeable. However, no one will need to become an expert. Just enough to be able to challenge a CFO or a CMO. MBAs try to close this gap. They offer different formats to learn enough about strategy, strategy implementation, and the different functions to have a solid framework to steer a business.
I would argue, this might be an overkill for a product leader. What if there were a training that would teach only the essentials that are really relevant for product leaders? In case you are interested in more, you should keep reading.

My manager has no product background. How shall I as a product manager deal with the situation? This is a topic that not only affects product managers on an executive level. As a Chief Product Officer, I would typically have a CEO as a line manager who doesn’t have a product background. But it can also happen to a Head of Product who reports to a CTO. Or to a Product Owner who is part of a Marketing Team.
Setups like this may occur in companies that are not aware of the fact that they actually are product companies. Product and IT is for them the execution department – based on “business” requirements. In case you are interested in learning more about product companies, please read a blog post that has been published earlier (“Product company maturity – how to find out where you stand.”) In such companies it is typical to have line managers who come from different backgrounds than product management.
At first sight, this might not matter. But think again! A person who isn’t used to thinking customer centric and who doesn’t understand the essence of agility will have a hard time with a product manager who challenges every bit that is asked from him/her.
Let’s have a look at the following dialogue. This dialogue is made up. However, it could happen any time between you and your line manager.
A made up real-world dialogue
A: I need your product roadmap for the next two years!
B: We work agile and always focus on the most valuable things first.
A: I need your product roadmap
B: We don’t know which features we are going to deliver such long term because we want to validate before developing
A: I need your product roadmap for the next two years
B: We have a long term north star and perfectly know which KPIs we want to move the needle on for business
A: I need…

Career planning for product managers is a bit tricky. On the one hand, there are many opportunities. On the other hand, there is so much confusion about job titles, role descriptions, career paths, etc.
Career at the cross roads
SPLSG sees the need to dedicate one full day training to this topic. Therefore attendees will benefit from their time and money investment from many angles:
Understanding the personal situation better. In other words, the focus will be on finding out more about my strengths and weaknesses. We will also look into opportunities and challenges for product leaders.
Being able to improve own “due diligence” in an interview situation. In other words, we will learn how to find out if a role in scope is meeting our expectations. Finally, challenging if the hiring company is a product company, etc.
Looking a couple of years ahead: Where do I want to be in 3-5 years?
