Handicap chart & scoring
SPL uses APA's Equalizer® handicap. Each Skill Level (SL) races to a different number of games — lower SLs race to fewer games to balance skill.
8-Ball race-to chart
Your Opponent (SL) →
| SL | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2/2 | 2/3 | 2/4 | 2/5 | 2/6 | 2/7 |
| 3 | 3/2 | 2/2 | 2/3 | 2/4 | 2/5 | 2/6 |
| 4 | 4/2 | 3/2 | 3/3 | 3/4 | 3/5 | 2/5 |
| 5 | 5/2 | 4/2 | 4/3 | 4/4 | 4/5 | 3/5 |
| 6 | 6/2 | 5/2 | 5/3 | 5/4 | 5/5 | 4/5 |
| 7 | 7/2 | 6/2 | 5/2 | 5/3 | 5/4 | 5/5 |
Read your row, then opponent's column. Format: YOU / OPPONENT. Example — SL5 vs SL3 → SL5 row, SL3 column = 4/2 (you race to 4, they race to 2).
How points are scored — 5 matches = 15 pts max
✅ Whitewash — opponent wins 0 games
When the winning player reaches their race-to without the opponent winning a single game.
Winner gets full 3 pts · Loser gets 0 pts
Example: SL5 beats SL3 with score 4–0 → 3 / 0
📊 Normal win — opponent wins at least 1 game
The winning player hits their race-to but the opponent won at least one game along the way.
Winner gets 2 pts · Loser still gets 1 pt for winning a game
Example: SL5 beats SL3 with score 4–1 → 2 / 1
Every non-forfeit matchup distributes exactly 3 pts total (either 3+0 or 2+1)
⚠ Forfeit — team brings fewer than 5 players
If a team can only field 4 players, the 5th match is forfeit.
Opponent gets 2 pts (not 3) — the missing player can't be "whitewashed"
Forfeiting team gets 0 pts from that matchup
Max team total drops to 14 pts (instead of 15) for that match
🎯 Worked example — SL3 vs SL3 (both race to 2)
Both players need 2 games to win the matchup.
Player A wins 2–0 → 3 / 0 (whitewash)
Player A wins 2–1 → 2 / 1 (B won 1 game)
Player B wins 1–2 → 1 / 2 (A won 1 game)
Player B wins 0–2 → 0 / 3 (B whitewashes A)
🎯 Worked example — SL5 vs SL3 (5 races to 4, 3 races to 2)
First to their own target wins. Bigger SL needs more games.
SL5 wins 4–0 → 3 / 0 (whitewash)
SL5 wins 4–1 → 2 / 1
SL3 wins 0–2 → 0 / 3 (SL3 whitewashes SL5)
SL3 wins 1–2 → 1 / 2 (SL5 won 1 game)
8-Ball Doubles — race-to by combined SL
Doubles is the 3rd matchup on every team night (8-ball only). The two paired players' SLs are added together. Combined SL must be ≤ 10 — e.g. an SL6 + SL5 can't pair up.
| Combined SL | Race to |
|---|---|
| 6 | 2 racks |
| 7 | 3 racks |
| 8 | 4 racks |
| 9 | 5 racks |
| 10 | 6 racks |
Example: SL4 + SL3 paired (combined 7) play first-to-3 racks. Both opponents pair the same way — their race-to is also from this chart.
🎱 Scotch doubles — how it plays
Partners alternate shots on the same visit until one of them misses
When a rack is won, the winning pair breaks the next rack
Partner coaching is allowed during the doubles match (only between the two partners)
No timeouts in doubles — timeouts only apply to singles
Points awarded the same as singles: 3/0 whitewash or 2/1 normal · forfeit = opp +2
9-Ball scoring — points per ball
Balls 1–8 pocketed legally1 pt each
9-ball pocketed legally2 pts
Max points per rack10 pts
9 on snap (break)+2 pts · rack wins
9-ball uses point targets instead of game targets. SL determines how many ball-points you need to win the matchup. 9-ball is singles only — no doubles format.
How your Skill Level works
SPL sets your Skill Level (SL) from results only — your game-winning %. We do not track innings, turn-overs ("lining") or defensive shots, so there's nothing to "sandbag" by missing on purpose.
The formula
SL = (G + 40) ÷ 20
G = your game-winning percentage (0–100)
Result is rounded to the nearest level. Half rounds up.
Worked examples
| Game win % | Calculation | Skill Level |
|---|---|---|
| 100% | (100+40)/20 = 7.00 | SL 7 |
| 60% | (60+40)/20 = 5.00 | SL 5 |
| 50% | (50+40)/20 = 4.50 | SL 5 |
| 48% | (48+40)/20 = 4.40 | SL 4 |
| 33% | (33+40)/20 = 3.65 | SL 4 |
| 0% | (0+40)/20 = 2.00 | SL 2 |
Rounding: 2.9 → 3 · 2.4 → 2 · 3.65 → 4
The rules
New players start atSL 3
RecalculatedEvery 2 weeks
Lowest SL (8-ball)2
Highest SL (8-ball)7
Highest SL (9-ball)10
We update SL only every 2 weeks — not after each match — so your level stays stable instead of jumping around. The first 2 weeks act as a calibration window starting from SL 3. Doubles wins count toward your individual SL the same as singles wins.
How the automatic update works
1
Every game result you and your captain sign off is stored against your record (games won, games played).
2
Every 2 weeks the app totals your games won ÷ games played across all matches so far to get your game-win % (G).
3
It runs (G + 40) ÷ 20, rounds to the nearest whole level, and clamps it to 2–7 (8-ball).
4
Your new SL shows on your profile and is used for race-to handicaps in your next matches. No one declares their own level.
The admin can also override any player's SL manually at any time (e.g. a known strong player who hasn't played enough games yet). Safety (defensive) shots are recorded but don't change SL unless the admin enables that formula.
📈 How your SL has moved
StartWeeks 1–2 · started at SL 3 (calibration)
Wk 2Won 58% of games → (58+40)/20 = 4.9 → SL 5
Wk 4Won 67% of games → (67+40)/20 = 5.35 → SL 5
Wk 6Won 60% of games → (60+40)/20 = 5.00 → SL 5 (stable)
Optional — half-point levels
SPL can also use finer levels — 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 … 7 — for closer matchmaking. This needs a half-step race-to chart, so we recommend whole-number levels for Season 1 and reviewing half-points later. (Admin decision.)

Ranked byPoints Available (PA%)
Tiebreaker 1Win %
Tiebreaker 2PPM
PA% = points you won ÷ points that were on the table. It rewards both winning and winning convincingly — so it blends Win%, PPM and PA into one fair number. (PPM is just PA% rescaled, so they always rank the same way.)
🤔 Why is a 70% player ahead of a 100% player?
Win% alone is misleading. A player can win every match by a single game, while another loses a few matches but dominates the games inside them. PA% captures that.
PA 73.3%Player A — won 70% of matches, but earned 73.3% of all available game-points → MVP #1
PA 72.7%Player B — won 100% of matches, but only 72.7% of available points (narrow wins) → MVP #2
Ranked by game-win % (PA%), then Win%, then PPM. The race resets every season.
